Note:
This Scottish born “outsider artist” immigrated to Toronto, Ontario after the war where he owned and operated a second-hand shop. Scottie began drawing in his mid 40s after picking up a pen.
The first art dealer to encounter Wilson’s work was Canadian, Douglas Duncan, who displayed them in various gallery shows. Scottie returned to the UK in the late 1940’s to exhibit in London. Both Picasso and Dubuffet admired and collected the self-taught artist’s works.
In the 1960s, Wilson began to create paintings on plates and was subsequently commissioned by Royal Worcester to design a series of dinnerware, which was produced until 1965. The circular shape of Cygne suggests this lot may have been intended for a plate design.
