Lot 112 Details
Bronze Hakuho-style Bronze Kannon, Japan, 19th Century or Earlier
With left hand raised and possibly originally holding a lotus stem, the right hand with a vase of amrita (the elixir which soothes all pain)
height 10.2" — 26 cm.
Estimate $2,000-$3,000
Provenance:
Lots 104 to 116: Buddhist Works of Art from a Toronto Collection
Note:
This bronze figure is imitating the style of late 7th century bronze Buddhist art from the Yamato area, the first flowering of a native Japanese Buddhist art tradition. Post Hakuho examples of bronze copies are rare, and almost none are recorded until the early Meiji Period. However, this bronze shows signs of possibly being older, perhaps a rare Edo Period recasting of a damaged icon.
