Lot 186
Small Guan-Type Hexagonal Hu Vase, Qing Dynasty or Earlier
Provenance:
Purchased form Pao & Moltke, Toronto.
Note:
Guan ware, along with Ru ware, Ding ware, Ge ware, and Jun ware, is regarded as one of the ‘Five Great Wares’ of the Song Dynasty. These wares were revived in porcelain-form during the early Qing Dynasty, and perfected by the Qianlong Emperor (1736-1795) as homage to the past.
The present vase is probably a later Qing copy of an 18th Century Song-revival vase. It maintains the shape, grace and glaze of the earlier examples.
