Provenance:

From the Collection of Wilhelm Montelius (1852-1918), thence by descent.

Note:

The Montelius family had a long family tradition of pursuing a career in law, however two sons, Wilhelm and Oscar, decided otherwise. Wilhelm became the Director of the Swedish telephone company Ericsson from 1901-1916, and Oscar (1843-1921) became an archaeologist and member of the Swedish National Heritage Board. Wilhelm’s passion for collecting Asian ceramics and works of art was aided by Ericsson’s business in China at the time, and prior to the outbreak of World War One, he managed to acquire several important pieces.
