Provenance:

From the Estate of John Hazedel Levis, thence by descent (Lots 75-83)

John Hazedel Levis (1904-1993) was an author, lecturer-recitalist, and composer-pianist. Mr. Levis lived in Shanghai from 1904 until 1949 and travelled to the United States, Canada and Hawaii, researching and lecturing during the early to mid 1930s.

Most importantly, he is known and very much respected for his book ‘Foundations of Chinese Musical Art’, published in 1936. His book has received written praise from figures such as Lin Yutang and T'ien Hsia Monthly. He has also contributed articles to T’ien Hsia Monthly and Asia Magazine publications from 1935-1937.

Mr. Levis lived in Shanghai at the same time as Lin Yutang and Mei Lanfang, and had great respect for them. He lived in Shanghai’s French Town in close proximity to Mei Lanfang (Avenue Joffre—now Middle Huaihai Rd.) and Rue Massenet (now Sinan Rd.), where Mei Lanfang lived. As they both had a deep feeling for the culture of Chinese music, they certainly knew of each other’s accomplishments, and would have likely met on occasion and attended the same functions. In fact, Mei’s address was hand written in Mr. Levis’s personal address book.
