Note:

British artist John Hayter executed a portrait of William Alexander Mackinnon, MP of Britain, standing that was later engraved.

Mackinnon wrote three books, "Thoughts on the Currency Question", “Public Opinion" and "The History of Civilization". The last two titles the sitter wrote are depicted in the painting. He holds a letter addressed to him.
