Provenance:

Galerie Valentin, Montreal
Private Collection, Montreal

Note:

After moving to Montreal in 1930, Biéler went on sketching trips in the Laurentians. Often drawings and watercolours served as studies for his fully realised canvases. We are fortunate to offer the watercolour study for Before the Auction, 1936, a large canvas in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada. When comparing the two works, the watercolour serves as his observation of rural Quebec life, whereas in the canvas work, Biéler has brought the central figures to the forefront of canvas and added more onlookers to enhance the action of the auction.
