Note:
Bruno Bobak worked across an array of media, producing works as a painter, a muralist, a sculptor and a printmaker. Born in Poland, Bobak immigrated to Canada with his family in 1925. His love of art was sparked as he studied under Arthur Lismer, Gordon Webber, Carl Schaefer and Elizabeth Wyn Wood. In the year 1943, Bobak joined the Royal Canadian Engineers as a sapper. He was deployed overseas in the Spring of 1944 and successively took up posts as a service artist and as an official War Artist until July of 1946. During this time, Captain Bobak met his future wife, Molly Lamb – who was employed as Canada’s first female War Artist. Both Bobaks continued to paint upon their return to Canada, settling in Vancouver and drawing inspiration from the terrains and vistas of British Columbia. Throughout his oeuvre, Bobak held steadfast in his painterly style, focusing on landscapes and city scenes as opposed to the growing inclination for abstract, non-objective art.
