Provenance:

Masters Gallery, Calgary
Private Collection, Vancouver

Literature:

Doris Shadbolt, E.J. Hughes, Vancouver Art Gallery, 1967, frontispiece with a photograph of E.J. Hughes
Ian M. Thom, E.J. Hughes, Vancouver Art Gallery, 2002, page 45, a self-portrait oil on canvas entitled "The Painter in his Studio" reproduced page 6

Note:

This self-portrait by E.J. Hughes was done at Rivers Inlet on the BC coast. Artist Paul Goranson, with whom Hughes collaborated on murals, invited him there to work on his family's fishboats, with the goal to earn money to paint. As Thom writes "For Hughes, this experience with boats and working within the marine landscape was of singular importance, planting the seed for much of his later work."
