François-Marc Gagnon, Paul-Émile Borduas: biographie critique et analyse de l’oeuvre, Fides, Montreal, 1978, pages 355, 356 and 406.

Note:

Realized a year after the beginning of his exile in the United States, Groupement Triangulaire is a prime example of the impact of American painting on Borduas’ work. While in New York, feeling the need to experiment, Borduas decided to focus on watercolour.

In the summer of 1955, Max Stern visited Borduas’ studio in Paris and acquired thirteen works, including this lot.
