Provenance:

Roberts Gallery Limited, Toronto
Private Collection, Toronto

Literature:

A.Y. Jackson, A Painter’s Country: The Autobiography of A.Y. Jackson, Clarke Irwin & Company Limited, Toronto/Vancouver, 1964, page 183-184.

Dennis Reid, Alberta Rhythm: The Later Work of A.Y. Jackson, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, 1982, pages 27 and 96.

Note:

A.Y. Jackson (1882-1974) camped near the Teshierpi Mountains between August 23 and 28, 1950. He was quite taken by the “desolate yet beautiful land” and would return again to paint it in 1951.

Jackson writes: “I had always wanted to get into the Barren Lands...It was an exciting country: with its moss and lichen and small plants turning red and orange, it looked like a rich tapestry, and big boulders were strewn about everywhere.”
