Provenance:

Private Collection, Maple, Ontario

Note:

A.Y. Jackson (1882-1974) was forever in search of fresh and inspiring subject matter for his art making, and consequently travelled far and wide throughout Canada to find it. Certain places, however, were loaded with personal meaning for the Quebecer and the lower St. Lawrence area of Quebec and the Laurentians, north of Montreal, were among his favourite parts of the country. He revisited them repeatedly, never tiring of narrating the story of what it meant to be Canadian, through his depiction of their rolling hills, valleys and woodlands.

Both Laurentian Woodland and Laurentian Cabins represent summer scenes with strong expressive colours, rhythmic lines, soft curving forms, and a high horizon line that became part of Jackson’s enduring artistic signature.
