Note:

Ontario-born Frederick Verner (1836-1928) made his first trip west in the early 1860s after returning from four years of study at London’s Hetherleys Academy of Arts (1856-60). Verner travelled through Ojibway country to Fort Garry and the Nelson River. Subsequently, much longer journeys were taken across the prairies and mountains in 1870 and 1873.

Like his artistic hero and later friend Paul Kane (1818-71), the aspiring young artist travelled by canoe, horseback and Red River cart compiling a portfolio of drawings and watercolours which he would draw upon for inspiration throughout his career.
