Provenance:

Private Collection, Toronto

Literature:

Marius Barbeau, Painters of Quebec (Canadian Art Series), The Ryerson Press, Toronto, 1995, page 33.

Note:

After a period of apprenticeship as an engraver, Henri Masson discovered an aptitude for painting, and his best work begins to emerge around 1939/40.

The rolling hills of Gatineau were Masson’s favourite subject as were, says Barbeau, the human toil, prayers, play, past-times, and occupations of the townsfolk. Barbeau describes Masson’s development at this time as “astonishing.”
