Lot Report

Provenance:

Private Collection, Oakville

Literature:

Hugh Dempsey, History in Their Blood: The Indian Portraits of Nicholas de Grandmaison, Douglas & McIntyre, Vancouver/Toronto, 1982.

Note:

Nicholas de Grandmaison is part of the second generation of great documenters of Canada’s native peoples following closely in the footsteps of artists like Paul Kane who excelled at this genre of portraiture. As Dempsey writes, while de Grandmaison worked nearly 100 years later than the earlier documenters, “in these portraits there is no diminution of vitality and freshness... Rather they are portraits that grip the imagination.”
