Born in Montreal, Beau spent a number of years studying and painting in Paris prior to his career as an assistant archivist at the Public Archives of Canada.

Primarily known as a genre painter in the Impressionist style, Beau began focusing exclusively on historical portraits commissioned by the Canadian government.
