PATRICK LANDSLEY (1926 - )

Patrick Landsley was born in 1926 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He studied at the Winnipeg School of Art from 1947 to 1949 under Lemoine Fitzgerald and Joseph Placket, and at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts from 1950 to 1951 under Arthur Lismer, Jacques de Tonnancour and Gordon Webber.

In 1951 Landsley was awarded a Canada Foundation Scholarship and studied in Paris at the Académie Montmartre under Fernand Léger; also at the Académie Ranson under Gustave Singier. After two and a half years in Europe, he returned to Canada and settled in Montreal, where he taught for Arthur Lismer at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Landsley’s paintings were primarily influenced by the teachings of Gustave Singier and later the School of Paris. and, in 1956, became a member of the newly formed Non-Figurative Artists’ Association, with whom he exhibited until 1961, when the group disbanded. In 1966, Landsley was a founding member of the Department of Fine Arts at Concordia University, which became a faculty two years later. He was a professor at the University for 30 years.

Landsley has participated in a number of solo and group exhibitions across Canada since 1957, and his work is included in prominent corporate and public collections. Upon his retirement in 1996, Landsley moved to Ontario, finally settling in St. Thomas.
