Note:

WALTER BACHINSKI (1935 - )

Walter Bachinski was born in 1939 in Ottawa, Ontario. He received his Bachelor of Arts in 1965 from the Ontario College of Art, being mentored by Frederick Hagan, and, upon graduating, travelled for several months throughout Germany, France, Spain, England and Holland. He went on to complete his Master's Degree in 1967 at the University of Iowa, under the direction of Mauricio Lasansky. Shortly thereafter, he began teaching drawing and printmaking at the University of Guelph, gaining tenure in 1970 and progressing through the ranks to Full Professor in 1984. Bachinski eventually left the university in 1984.

The early works of Bachinski feature primarily monochromatic prints and drawings. In the early 1970’s, he began working on sculpture in the round and relief; and then explored the themes of “Mother and Child” and “Artist and Model”. His work became more classical in style and in 1978-79 he spent one year in France where he started to work seriously in colour with pastels, focussing on the concept of Still Life.

Since 1994, Bachinski has devoted himself exclusively to his art in his studio and small press publishing, establishing Shanty Bay Press in 1996 with Janis Butler. He has had more than twenty solo exhibitions, including five major surveys mounted by public galleries in Canada. Bachinski was the subject of Bachinski: Still Life - Ten Years at the MacLaren Art Center, Barrie, Ontario, in 1992. His works feature in prominent corporate and private collections throughout Canada. Bachinski lives and works in Shanty Bay, Ontario.
