“Different artists or personalities lead to different styles. I am not primarily a realist. A lot of people think that when you are doing a realist painting, there’s no abstraction. In fact, it’s all abstraction. I paint the light, not the objects. I want it all to be there but it has to have content, composition, colour use, subtlety and beauty. Beauty is very important. I want the painting to be good on all levels. Like a craftsmen or builder, you have to start with a foundation. I am interested in how painters have solved certain things — how to paint grass or skin.”

- Andrew Valko -

Born 1957 in Prague, Czechoslovakia, Andrew Valko came to Canada as a child in 1968. He received his Diploma in Graphic Design and Applied Arts from the Red River Community College in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He also studied wood block printing with renowned artist Toshi Yoshida at Yoshida Hanga Academy in Tokyo, Japan.

Valko has exhibited his hyper-realist works in both solo and group exhibitions, and received the commission from Canada Post Corporation to illustrate four Pan American Games stamps and the 125th Anniversary of the RCMP commemorative stamp; as well as, a design for a fifty-cent piece for the Royal Canadian Mint. He was also commissioned by the University of Manitoba to paint a portrait of the Chacellor Harvey Secter and by the Manitoba government to paint portraits of Premier of Manitoba Gary Filmon and Gary Doer, and the Speakers of the House Louise Dacquay, Deni Rocan and George Hicks.

Valko’s works are included in many private and public collections in Canada and abroad, including the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, The Canada Council Art Bank, and in 1994, he was elected into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. Valko lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
