Note:

Breaking through the tradition of conventional Canadian landscape paintings by the Group of Seven and others, Painters Eleven founder William Ronald relocated to New York to work alongside Hans Hofmann who was famous for the “push and pull” theory which stated that movement is created by the interaction of warm and cool colors. In 1955, Roberts Gallery exhibited the first Painters Eleven show which was extremely successful - abstraction and Ronald’s thick and aggressive brushstrokes became recognized as a new direction in Canadian art. After a decade in New York - working with Frank Stella and a contract with Kootz Gallery - Ronald returned to Toronto and continued his career as a prolific abstract painter.
