Provenance:

Private Collection, Toronto

Literature:

“Rachel Berman: the Struggle with Self,” in Queen’s Quarterly, Vol. 120, Issue 2, Summer 2013, page 282.

Note:

Painter and illustrator Rachel Berman described her paintings as autobiographical “...they are about me trying to find out who I am.” Her quest for identity was arduous: she grew up in New Orleans under the name Susan King, discovered at the age of 50 that she was adopted, and spent her late adulthood exploring her Jewish heritage. Berman’s urban landscapes, inspired by her travels to Morocco, London, Paris, Ireland and New York, have the distinct characteristics of receding perspective and intricately detailed interiors. The people she met on those travels became the subjects of her anecdotal works and reflect society’s marginalized.
