With a career that began over forty years ago, Montreal born painter Yves Gaucher is one of Canada’s highest acclaimed Color Field painters and was a leader of Québec’s printmaking resurgence of the 50s and 60s. Gaucher began studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montreal in 1954, but was dismissed before completing his degree due to his love of taboo subject matter. A year later, he returned to study printmaking where he continued to break down conventions by developing the “heavy embossing” technique. Gaucher’s work is influenced by mathematics, symmetry, pattern, spatial relationships, music and poetry.

After his first solo exhibition in 1957 at the Galerie l'échange in Montreal, Gaucher’s career was followed by a string of accolades: In 1960, he became the president of the Association des Peintures-Gravures de Montreal, and twenty years later was nominated to the Order of Canada. He also worked on various committees with the Canada Council for the Arts as a panelist and taught visual art at Concordia University in Montreal. His work can be seen in the permanent collections of the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Musée d'art Contemporain de Montréal, the Museum of Modern Art and the Martha Jackson Gallery in New York as well as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England.
