Literature:

Remains of an undated newspaper clipping to the stretcher headed “Wills and Bequests/ Gifts to Charity” may relate to this painting in its entirety. The article cites: “Mr. Joseph Farquharson of Aberdeen, formerly of Porchester Gardens ...scape painter, left personal property” on his death on April 15, 1935 to Great Britain totaling 129,931 Pounds Sterling. “He left: to Aberdeen Art Gallery... a portrait (text torn away and disjointed)...”

Exhibited:

An unidentified label with title and number 6419 to the stretcher

Note:

Born in Edinburgh, Farquharson studied at the Royal Scottish Academy followed by a period in Paris in 1880 under Carolus-Duran (also represented in this sale, Lot 371). The fluid painterliness and natural effects of Farquharson's landscape paintings, which often feature shepherds and sheep set against an evening sky, were developed and matured during the four winters (1880-1884) he spent studying in Carolus-Duran's studio in Paris. Here, he was a contemporary of John Singer Sargent, who in turn became a firm friend and admirer of the Scottish artist.
