Provenance:

“Spillane” inscribed verso

Note:

The lines of this master draughtsman illustrate an obvious command of the red chalk medium. Composed of crosshatches and thick and thin lines, the sanguine strokes are carefully descriptive marks rendered with thought. Confident lines are smudged to soften contours and create shadow. Though the actualized painting for this study is hitherto unknown, it is clear that the artist is attempting to analyze the poses of his figures so that they may be composed with the utmost realism.
