The story tells of a Tjungula man in the form of a Blue Tongued Lizard who was out hunting in the Lurlappi area. The Lizard disappeared into the sinkhole and still lives there today”
The Warlayirti artists were based at remote Balgo in Western Australia. The School of art was established in 1987 after the Balgo people took up painting with acrylic in the early 1980s.
Balgo painting is renowned for its bright, saturated colour and bold designs.
In 1992, the National Gallery of Victoria held a major exhibition of Balgo and other Kimberley art, entitled Images of Power. Warlayirti Artists Aboriginal Corporation is a 100% Indigenous-owned and operated Art Centre servicing approximately 300 hundred Indigenous artists.
