Note:
James Pattison Cockburn (1779–1847), was an army officer and watercolour painter born on 18 March 1779 in New York, the son of Colonel John Cockburn and his wife, Mary, daughter of Colonel Sir James Cockburn.
Cockburn spent two periods in Canada during his military career, the first, from November 1822 to June 1823. On his second posting from April 1826 to August 1832, during his mature period, he sketched both Upper and Lower Canada scenes namely those of Niagara Falls being some of his finest work.
