DOMAINE JEAN-LOUIS CHAVE HERMITAGE BLANC 2010 (2)

Rhône.

As for the 2010 Hermitage Blanc, it is an exquisite wine with fabulous fruit intensity. Lots of acacia flower, anise, quince, fig and pineapple intermixed with a hint of white peaches emerge from this well-delineated, full-bodied, enormously endowed, complex, dry white Hermitage. This wine lives up to the reputation bestowed on it by President Thomas Jefferson when he said in the 1780s that white Hermitages were France’s greatest white wine. The 2010 should drink well for 30-40+ years. December 2012 WA 97

DOMAINE WEINBACH RIESLING SCHLOSSBERG SELECTION DE GRAINS NOBLES 2004 (1 hf ltr.)

Alsace.
stained label

A 2004 Riesling Schlossberg Quintessence de Grains Nobles is aptly named in view of its phenomenal – if embryonic – concentration. Candied citrus rind, spiced watermelon rind, marzipan, licorice, honey, and herbal distillates all waft from the glass. On the palate, a pointed fresh citrus character is balanced against honey and suggestions of herbal liqueur. This finishes long, lacy, racy and refined for all of its sweetness, missing the exciting complexity of its S.G.N. sibling today, almost certainly just on account of its youth. It should go on for 25-30 years, and I would probably not pull a cork for a decade. February 2008 WA 94
