Note:
Ákos Birkás is a Hungarian painter known primarily for his abstract works, but he has continually negotiated a relationship between abstraction and figurative representation throughout his career. His large, ovular, abstract portraits known as ‘Kopfs’ (Heads) are his most significant body of work, produced from the mid-eighties up until the late nineties. The series consists of more than 200 individual artworks, often painted on canvases that are the scale of the body, and occasionally constructed as offset diptychs as in this example.
