STRUTTING POLAR BEAR
signed in Roman and syllabics, c. 1970
10 x 8.25 x 5 in — 25.4 x 21 x 12.7 cm
Pauta was one of the first Inuk artists to develop a distinctive, personally unique style. A Pauta bear among a shelf of polar bear sculptures is instantly recognized. Although he worked on a wide variety of subjects, his dancing bears are particularly significant to him because polar bears are important shamanistic creatures, embodied spirit helpers of Inuit culture.
