Provenance:

Waddington’s Photographic Literature and Photography Auction, May 4, 2001, Lot 103

Note:

Kusakabei Kimbei was one of the most accomplished Japanese photographers of his time, operating a studio in Yokohama from the early 1880s until 1913. During this period, Japan had perfected the art of hand-colouring photographs, a process that did not gain the acceptance of photographers and critics in the West.
