ROBERT BATEMAN
Literature:
Robert Bateman and Ramsay Derry (text), “The Art of Robert Bateman”, Toronto, 2006, page 135.
Note:
While describing another painting depicting gulls surrounding a boat, Bateman discusses his preference when combining elements of nature and man-made “things” within his work, saying that he will “…usually choose subjects that nature has already taken a bite out of. A new, freshly painted, steel-hulled oil carrier doesn’t have too much appeal for me, but a well-worn wooden fishing boat…with peeling paint and patina from age and weathering, has become part of the natural world.”
