The Indians depicted in paintings from Krieghoff ’s Montreal years are based on the Iroquois people from the village of Caughnawaga located on Indian lands bordering the St. Lawrence south shore just upstream from the Lachine Rapids. They were shy, quiet individuals and spoke the Mohawk tongue.
