Lot Report

Provenance:

Loch Mayberry Fine Art Inc., Winnipeg.
Private Collection, Winnipeg.

Literature:

J. Russell Harper, Krieghoff, Toronto, 1979, pages 120 and 124 (fig. 114) for a related subject entitled St. Ann’s (sic) Falls, Looking Downstream from the Grand Rocks.
Dennis Reid, Krieghoff/Images of Canada, Toronto, 1999 pages 73, 110 (colour plate 50) and 111 (colour plate 51) for related works in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada executed between 1854-55.

Note:

Shortly after moving to Quebec about 1853, Krieghoff painted numerous versions of every waterfall within visiting distance which, according to Reid, would have appealed to both visitors and residents alike.

Reid writes that a superb pair of paintings were acquired by the National Gallery of Canada in 1995 depicting the falls on the St. Anne River, one from above (plate 50), the other from below (plate 51). In the view below the falls a tiny figure of an artist, his portfolio tucked under his arm, leans against a blasted tree on the edge of the precipice, better to absorb the sublime power of the experience. Reid’s description also applies to this lot.
