Provenance:

Private Collection, Montreal

Note:

Extensively trained in both Montreal and Paris, Rita Mount travelled across North America questing for landscapes to paint. She first visited the west – Banff, Victoria, British Columbia and Wyoming – in the early 1930s. Following these travels, she ventured eastward – sketching and painting in Nova Scotia, Quebec, and in the Gaspé region wherein this painting is set. A small, coastal village, L'Anse-à-Beaufils is rumoured to have been named after a French noble who lived in the area during the time of colonization. The warm atmosphere of the small fishing harbour is exquisitely fashioned by Mount. Angular mast poles, rigging and sails, reflect back, softened by the water. The muted blue is punctuated by vivacious red and turquoise in Mount’s signature melding of Impressionistic brushstrokes and Decorative Realism.
