An old unidentified printed auction label, number “4817” attached to the verso backing paper with printed text that reads:
“Oil Painting of Charles William Couldock. By W. M. Chase. Bust-portrait of Charles William Couldock, famous actor brought to America by Charlotte Cushman. Signed. - ‘W. M. Chase / 20” x 16’)”;
Ex-Collection Barrett Wendell inscribed in pen and ink to the above label;
From whom purchased by Frank E. Whitman, in Charleston, circa 1913 inscribed in the same pen and ink to the label who also inscribed further: “I had it framed in oval (and corners folded back) to make it a companion to Mrs. Fennell” (the following portrait, Lot 9, in this sale);
By descent to his daughter, Adelaide Whitman Ralsten Ebeling;
By descent to Mary Adelaide Ralsten Beecher;
By descent to her daughter, the present Private Collection, Nova Scotia, held in the family for over 100 years
