Acheson was appointed Governor General of British North America and Lieutenant-Governor of Lower Canada in 1835. He was commissioner in the Royal Commission for the Investigation of all Grievances Affecting His Majesty’s Subjects in Lower Canada and officially established the Diocese of Montreal in 1836
