Admiral of the Fleet David Beatty, 1st Earl Beatty, GCB, OM, GCVO, DSO (1871–1936) achieved career success at an early age, commanding the British battlecruisers at the Battle of Jutland in 1916; perhaps best remembered today for his comment, upon the sinking of two of his battlecruisers, that "there is something wrong with our bloody ships today". In the 1920's he served a lengthy term as First Sea Lord (head of the Royal Navy).
