Provenance:

Private Collection, Toronto

Note:

Senator Edward Bates (1793-1869) was an Attorney General in President Abraham Lincoln’s Cabinet. Prior to that, he was based in St. Louis and was the Attorney General for the State of Missouri. Bates was prominent in State politics from 1822.

Chester Harding executed portraits of many important American politicians in the years between 1826 and 1860. Harding spent his winters in St. Louis from 1826 for many years. It makes sense that this portrait was painted in St. Louis and likely around 1835. The portrait appears to be of Edward Bates when he was around 40 years old.
